Name that pupa

bugonstick

...or larva or chrysalis or whatever heck form of baby bug it may be.

We found it in the yard today, buried in the moist ground. It's a little over an inch long, dark red in color and has a hard, armor-like shell that makes your skin crawl makes you really super enthusiastic about researching this little backyard neighbor of ours!

bug

It took all my courage to take these pictures and as I type, I'm trying my hardest not to get overtaken by the eebie jeebies. I'm not a fan of the bugs.

We've half-heartedly poured through our insect field guide but all these little critters look the same (I'm sorry, I hope that doesn't sound insect-ist of me). Any bug enthusiasts out there that know what this thing is?

I am guessing you are a mom to boys! My girls wouldn't bring that to me. Thank goodness!

Looks kind of prehistoric looking, and reminds me too much of a cockroach - you are very brave to get that close:)

ow what it is, but I think it is great that you let the kids play around and discover this kinda stuff. Korby, our daughter ,was disecting worms out in the yard the other day. Why not let them, right?

Wish I could help. I hope it doesn't have any friends!

looks like the one we found. Kids kept it and it began to hatch. Big huge moth looking thing. It has to have water to drink as it hatches. Ours died because we didn't know.

YUmmy too!!! As these tasty bugs make a great little protein snack, crunchy like a Cheeto, Yum YUM.

once when my oldest son was an infant I was always fishing string and things out of his mouth...so when I said "come on, what do you have now" and he wouldn't give it up I knew it was something he should not have...

I got it...it was a beetle and it was still alive cuz when I dropped it it scurried away...now let's hear a collective {{eeeeewwwwwww}} you know you wanna!

looks like some kind of butterfly chrysalis to me...we have just been studying these in school...you can put it in one of those butterfly habitat containers and see what happens..just glue it with school glue to something so it hangs or put it right in some dirt and wait to see.
